Host to over 6 million visitors every year

Having hosted everything from BBC Sports Personality Of The Year to motorsport events and the Crufts Dog Show, the NEC is also one of the big names in entertainment. Firmly established as the venue of choice for a calendar of trade events, it’s the place to be seen for any company that’s looking to impress a national or European marketplace.

The Genting Arena has been establishing a reputation for the best in internationally famous music and comedy. Whether you’re heading to Birmingham for a crucial work meeting, or just to make the most of your free time, finding the right hotel will help you get your visit off to the best possible start.

starCheap Accommodation near NEC Birmingham

starHotels near Genting Arena

The NEC itself plays host to over 6 million visitors every year – a fact reflected in the range of nearby accommodation options. Understandably weighted towards business travel, you can expect a number of familiar names. If you need to be within easy commuting distance, and particularly within affordable taxi range, there’s much to be said for location.

For anyone whose working day at the NEC depends on staying in touch, and on anything more than the standard wifi connection back at the hotel, it’s worth enquiring about the range of business facilities, and whether these are offered on a pre-booked or open availability basis. On-site facilities, bars and restaurants – and their opening hours – may also be a key consideration if work runs late, or if networking is an important part of the working day.

The complex comprises 20 different halls and covers over 2.5 square kilometres: with this in mind, it may even be worthwhile considering the location of your hotel in relation to your event. Many properties are within walking distance or a few minutes drive away.

The NEC has built its reputation on connectivity, and the exhibition centre is served by its own railway station and by Birmingham International airport. Given their international clientele, nearby hotels may be more ready to offer flexible check-in or check-out times – which may be just as useful if you’re travelling to the Genting Arena for a night out.

However, it’s always sensible to double-check for any surcharges that may be added.
Looking further afield, the excellent bus and train connections make the hotels of central Birmingham a convenient option, particularly within taxi range of New Street station.

Alternatively, you could beat the crowds with some more lateral-thinking choices. Coventry station is only 11 minutes away by train, with affordable and regular connections to Birmingham International, while even London hotels near Euston make a day’s visit to the NEC easily commutable. If it’s important to have a change of pace after a long working day, the West Midlands has plenty to offer.

Destinations such as Leamington Spa or the Warwickshire countryside around Henley in Arden are typically within 45 minutes’ drive, and offer a genuinely different character and sense of place – perfect for getting away from it all.

History

The National Exhibition Centre was originally established in February, 1976, christened by Queen Elizabeth II. The first ever event conducted at the centre was the International Spring Fair, which continues to take place every year.

Initially, the NEC was actually planned to be built near the city of Leicester. These plans were then later abandoned when Leicester’s City Council came to a decision that it should be located closer to the popular tourist destination of London.

In 1971, authorities commissioned the construction of the NEC in Birmingham instead. Consisting of 89,000 square metres, the structure, designed by Edward Mills, has continued to expand since its early days.

Three more halls were added in 1989, and four more in 1993. In 1998, additional four halls were opened by the European Commission for Transport. Currently the expo’s cumulative space exceeds 190,000 square metres.

The exhibit center has also recently been the subject of a 40 million pound renovation programme, that is expected to be completed soon. The programme is focused on improving catering, seating and parking facilities within the building.

Genting Indoor Arena

The facility has grown to become one of the most popular venues for music concerts within the city of Birmingham. As part of the overall NEC complex, the multi-purpose arena was opened in 1980, under the name ‘NEC Arena’. It is estimated that the NEC and Genting Arena experience traffic of approximately 3 million every year.

The name of the arena was changed only in 2008, following a sponsorship agreement with the electronics tycoon LG. An investment of approximately 29 million pounds led to a number of renovations being made on the property, commissioned by the Birmingham City Council.

The current site celebrated the completion of the renovation program in 2009, hosting a Tom Jones concert.

Currently, the overall capacity of the indoor arena exceeds 16,000, making it comparable to some of the largest venues in the UK including the popular O2 Arena located in London and the Manchester Arena. From January 2015 the venue is renamed into the Genting Arena, a Malaysian company. Many hotels in Birmingham near National Exhibition Centre NEC and Genting arena do offer free parking, some feature a swimming pool.

Cheap Accommodation – Where Should I Stay ?

Apart from the top tier hotels that may prove to be expensive for more budget-minded tourists, there are a number of B&B options as well as cheap hotels in the area, providing excellent amenities and great comfort as well.

Most booked hotels that are only a brief walk away from the NEC include the Hilton Metropole, Arden Hotel & Leisure Club, the Premier Inn NEC, and the Ramada Encore Hotel. Some have rates, breakfast included and feature a swimming pool.
