Located in the Greenwich Peninsula in London, the arena gets its name from the telecom giant, O2. Since its establishment, the venue has been used to conduct some of the largest entertainment and sporting events in the world, owing to its immense size as well as capacity.
When staying for one night or the weekend in a bed and breakfast, a breakfast is served and is included in the room rate. Many well priced and low cost establishments offer also free Wifi internet access. Some have a swimming pool and gym as well.
The O2 arena is located on the other side of the Thames River from the Excel Centre. Accommodation near the Excel Centre can be found in the London Docklands area.
History
The O2 Arena was commissioned to be built in 2001, with construction beginning in 2003. Although the entire project was only fully completed in 2007, once the interior of the large dome was built, it became the venue for the annual Crisis Open Christmas event, organized by the locally well-known charity, Crisis.
When it comes to seating, the complex borrows floor plans from the Manchester Arena. Seating inside can be shifted around, with even the ground surface being modifiable.
The ground surface consists of a basketball court, a conference area, concert locations, an ice rink and an exhibition area. Particular segments of the arena can also be hired out individually for private events.
Currently, it boasts of being the third most popular venue across the world with regard to music concerts, only being outranked by the Manchester Arena in Manchester city centre and Madison Square Garden in New York City. The O2 also growns in popularity as being a major sporting venue. Another major complex in the UK is the SSE Hydro in Glasgow.
