History of Anfield Road football stadium in Liverpool UK
Anfield is the official stadium of Liverpool Football Club and has a capacity of roughly 45,000, ranking it the 7th largest football ground in England. Originally the home ground of Everton until they relocated to Goodison Park in 1891, Liverpool FC have called this stadium home since they formed in 1892.
Two of Anfield’s gates are named after former managers of the club, Bob Paisley and Bill Shankly. At the start of the millennium, plans were unveiled to replace this stadium, however the new owners instead decided to redevelop the ground and increase its seating capacity to around 65,000.
This ground has seen some spectacular highlights over the years including its 5th round FA cup match against Wolverhampton in 1952. This was the game that saw the highest attendance ever recorded at this stadium. Anfield is closely situated to Lime Street Station and also a fine selection of low cost B&B’s and cheap hotels. Travel – How to get to Matches
Nearest Train Station ?
You can get also on to the underground system through to Central or Moorfields and get a train on the Northern Line towards either Kirkby or Ormskirk. Alight at Kirkdale or Sandhills and you can walk to the ground. There are frequent shuttle buses from Sandhills Station, on the Merseyrail Northern Line on a matchday.
Coming from the North
Driving from the North you have to exit the M6 at junction 28, than follow the signs for Liverpool A58 into Walton Hall Avenue, drive past Stanley Park and turn left into Anfield Road where you will see the football ground.
Driving from the South
When travelling from the South take the M62 to the end of the motorway, than turn right into Queens Drive A5058, after 3 mile turn left into Utting Avenue, after 1 mile turn left into Anfield Road, location of the the Reds football stadium.
Coming from the East
Drive via the Mersey Tunnel (toll tunnel), and follow signs for Preston A580, you will arrive to Walton Hall Avenue. Just before you get to Stanley Park turn left into Anfield Road, where you will see Liverpool’s home ground.
By Bus – Coach
The stadium is well serviced by local buses. Line 26 (from Paradise St. bus station) or 17B, 17C, 17D & 217 (from Queen Square bus station) stop directly to the ground. Line 68 & 168 (between Bootle and Aigburth) or line 14 (from Queen Square) & 19 stop a short walk away.
