Central Derby is a great destination for a cultural break with a diverse and lively mixture of events and festivals to attend. There are international film festivals at the QUAD, a varied programme of plays and entertaining shows at the city’s theatre and spooky night-time guided Ghost Walks around the historic alley ways and passages of the old town.
The city played an important part in the Industrial Revolution due to its strategic central location and prospered during this period. There are some impressive stately homes in the area to visit such as Calke Abbey with its landscaped park.
Visit the old Roundhouse and stroll along Friargate Street to admire the Georgian architecture. Continue shopping at the new intu shopping centre or try a sample of the local beer after a tour of the city’s Brewing Company.

With its central location Derbyshire is easily accessible from around the UK, especially by rail with direct train routes from London St Pancras to the city’s central train station. The train station is a main interchange point for regional and national train routes. Reasonably priced hotel accommodation for the night and bed and breakfast establishments are located close by, along with guest rooms often made available for university students.
Derby university is situated on the edge of the city centre and promotes itself as being in one of the safest cities in the region. The sports amenities in the town are a great attraction: including the Alter Rock Climbing Centre, the County Cricket Ground, the County Football Stadium, rugby and basketball facilities.
If you are visiting the city for short stays there are rooms to let, cheap hotels, inns and b&b’swithin short distances from all these sporting centres. However you may want a more relaxing break and prefer a bed and breakfast stay situated on the outskirts of the town center. Benefitting from being close to the peaceful surrounding lush countryside while having the city attractions only a short train or bus ride away.

The bus station for catching National Express coaches is located on Morledge. The city is well connected with Leicester, London, Leeds, Sheffield, and Birmingham.
There is also a bus service which runs every 10 minutes between Royal Derby Hospital, the city centre and London Road Community Hospital.
A very cheap place to stay beside the rail station is 3 star rated European Inn. The hotel offers modern accommodation for the night with free Wi-Fi and free on-site car parking, plus an Italian-style restaurant on site.
Another city center lodging property is 4 star The Stuart Hotel. It has a great location just a 5-minute walk from the Westfield Shopping Centre and Derby Train Station.
