Named after the River Chelt
Cheltenham is named after the river of Chelt that runs through the town. Mineral springs were discovered in the area in 1716, and Cheltenham has been recognised as a popular health and balneology centre ever since. The popularity of the spa city grew even further after George III and the royal family visited the region in 1788.
In addition, the town’s horse racing traditions were established in 1815, and the Cheltenham Festival began in 1902. The town is mainly acknowledged for its maritime climate that is characterised by very mild winters. This mild weather is another factor that establishes the popularity of the spa town as a year-round travel destination.
There are numerous signs directing travellers towards the city. During Festival days, National Express runs a dedicated coach service from many destinations in the UK directly to the horse racecourse. The Festival takes place during March, and the round trip costs no more than 20 pounds. National Express ticket outlets sell coach tickets, and these are also available online.
Cheltenham can also be reached by air. During Festival days, Ryanair offers flights to and from the three airports located in the vicinities of the town. Birmingham International Airport is the closest one, and it is located an hour drive away.
The spa town can also be reached by bus and by train. The Spa Station is located only two miles away from the racecourse. If you want to travel in style, you can choose the Special Steam Train package from Winchcombe to Cheltenham. The journey lasts approximately 30 minutes.
