Named after the River Chelt
Cheltenham is named after the river of Chelt that runs through the town. Mineral springs were discovered in the area in 1716, and Cheltenham has been recognised as a popular health and balneology centre ever since. The popularity of the spa city grew even further after George III and the royal family visited the region in 1788.
