Western General Hospital – Introduction

accommodation western general hospitalThe Western General Hospital is located in north west Edinburgh Scotland and is now a renowned centre for the treatment of cancer, but it started life in 1761 as a poorhouse and school for orphans. By the mid 19th century conditions were fairly horrific and improvements were made. It continued to provide care for the poor of the city until the First World War, when it was requisitioned by the Army Medical Corps.

During the Second World War it became a Polish hospital. Much of the modern hospital is housed in new buildings but the remaining Victorian parts are worth a look. An extensive travel network brings visitors to Edinburgh. Close to major motorway networks, it is easily accessible from all parts of the United Kingdom.

During the university holidays affordable rooms with bed and breakfast can be booked on the campuses or if you want more independence, look for self-catering rooms or apartments to rent. You are bound to find something to suit you in this wonderful city.

Twenty five airlines fly into the airport, which is only 9 miles west of the city. There are good transport links by bus, taxi or the new tram route. The city is a vibrant, cosmopolitan place, great for a short break.

The city is the capital of Scotland and home to its Parliament. Edinburgh Castle looks down over the city and is linked by the Royal Mile to Holyroodhouse, the Queen’s official residence in Scotland. The oldest part dates from the 12th century and it houses the Scottish Crown Jewels, the 15th century cannon, Mons Meg, and the National War Museum of Scotland.
