Western General Hospital – Introduction
The Western General Hospital is located in north west Edinburgh Scotland and is now a renowned centre for the treatment of cancer, but it started life in 1761 as a poorhouse and school for orphans. By the mid 19th century conditions were fairly horrific and improvements were made. It continued to provide care for the poor of the city until the First World War, when it was requisitioned by the Army Medical Corps.
During the Second World War it became a Polish hospital. Much of the modern hospital is housed in new buildings but the remaining Victorian parts are worth a look. An extensive travel network brings visitors to Edinburgh. Close to major motorway networks, it is easily accessible from all parts of the United Kingdom.
During the university holidays affordable rooms with bed and breakfast can be booked on the campuses or if you want more independence, look for self-catering rooms or apartments to rent. You are bound to find something to suit you in this wonderful city.
Another major city hospital is the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh.
Plenty of car parking in the city means bringing your car is easy and gives you the freedom to explore the surrounding countryside. Coaches run from all major cities into the bus terminus and there are two railway stations, Waverley and the Haymarket. An overnight sleeper train runs from London Euston Station to Waverley Railway Station.
Twenty five airlines fly into the airport, which is only 9 miles west of the city. There are good transport links by bus, taxi or the new tram route. The city is a vibrant, cosmopolitan place, great for a short break.
The city is the capital of Scotland and home to its Parliament. Edinburgh Castle looks down over the city and is linked by the Royal Mile to Holyroodhouse, the Queen’s official residence in Scotland. A visit to the castle is a must for everybody. The oldest part dates from the 12th century and it houses the Scottish Crown Jewels, the 15th century cannon, Mons Meg, and the National War Museum of Scotland.
Visit in August to catch the Fringe Festival, three weeks of comedy, music and culture, or come in the depths of winter for a true Scottish Hogmanay celebration on January 31st. Princes Street is where to head for shopping or to start off your evening in the buzzing nightlife. When you have had your fill of city life head out to the beautiful coasts and countryside only a short drive away.
Cheap Accommodation – Where Should I Stay for the Night ?
One of the closest accommodations from the general hospital is 4 star superior Channings. It’s is a friendly 4-star hotel with free Wi-Fi and a wine bar. Princes Street is a 10-minute walk away. Each elegant guest room at Channings is individually decorated, with antique furniture. Many rooms have city or garden views and there is 24-hour room service.
Another accommodation not far from the western hospital in Edinburgh is B+B Edinburgh. This boutique bed and breakfast stay has a historically listed facade and a charming old staircase. Wi-fi is free throughout the building. Haymarket Rail Station is a 10-minute walk from the building. The shops, restaurants and attractions of Princes Street can also be reached in around 10 minutes on foot.
A cheap property nearby is 3 star rated Haymarket Hotel. This inexpensive place to stay offers charming, Victorian town house accommodation with friendly service and free Wi-Fi. Haymarket rail station is a brief walk away. Edinburgh Castle and Murrayfield Rugby Stadium are nearby. There is good access to the Air Link bus to Edinburgh Airport.
