Home ground for the Saint Supporters

southampton football club ground accommodationSt Mary’s Stadium – The New Spiritual Home for The Saint Supporters. Formed in 1885 by members of St. Mary’s Church Young Men’s Association, Southampton has witnessed a great deal of change and club growth since they first joined the Southern League in 1894 brandishing their team colors of red and white.

With both traditional bed and breakfast or guest houses and stylish hotels, hostels and apartments to offer, the Chapel area offers suitable accommodation for the night and sporting heritage for everyone.

After spending 103 years in the Dell Stadium which seen it’s fair share of rocky club history from uncertain Division status and an unfortunate ground bombing in World War II, The Saints reigned supreme in 1976 after winning the FA Cup.

The side further emerged with the sign-up of sensational players such as Kevin Keegan, Alan Sheerer and Matt Le Tissier with many other young high-profile players opting to adorn the red and white kit to the present day.

Although much of the club’s history appeared rooted in the old Dell ground, The Saints enhanced it’s club priorities and division status. With a squad consisting of international stars, the new campaign for a brighter future was strengthened with the move to St Mary’s Stadium in 2011, recorded to be a ‘spiritual homecoming’ for the Southampton Football Club.

This new development is one of the largest football grounds in Southern England and with a capacity of almost 32,600 is classified by the UEFA as a four star rated stadium. Bowled shaped, equipped with two large screens to broadcast ground action and complete with four stands dedicated to facing Southampton areas.

Getting to the city – transport

Arriving into the Chapel city area is easy and there are a variety of different transport options you can use to reach your chosen accommodation for a night while you are in the city.

Surrounding the ground and only a short walk away you can find numerous bus stops located on the Northam Road with the City Center situated extremely close. There is a range of individual bus operators that run services around and near the Chapel area.

Approximately 20 minutes walk from the football ground you can also find the Town Quay Ferry Terminal, Cruise Port Terminals and the Southampton Central Train Station (Commercial Road side).

Most of the accommodation to let offers private parking for guests however if you would like to venture into the City Center shopping complexes provide Multi-storey car parks at their standard ticket prices while parking can be found in prime central areas. On match days the area can be congested and the City Council do impose parking restrictions in the local area.

Hotel and B&B rooms for the night – Bars and Restaurants

guest roomIf you choose to stay for one night, a few nights or longer in the Chapel Area there are plenty of cheap hotels, cheaper hostels, and well priced b&b’s or guest houses that can offer you a pleasant stay with bed and breakfast included and nearby restaurants, pubs and bars for lunch and evening dining.

If it’s football spirit you crave, the King Alfred Pub located on the Northam Road host basic fan essentials such as sky sports, beer and match day barbecues however the The Admiral Saint Lucius Curtis also offers a friendly atmosphere with a fantastic selection of drinks. For best budget food, the city is bursting with affordable food options.

For those that like tradition you can find classic Tavern dishes and gastropub specials while those who prefer quirky and international cuisine can choose from spicy Indian cooking, interesting Greek platters and warming Italian inspired plates.
