Book early to avoid disappointment
This is an expensive area to find accommodation in and this problem is exacerbated around New Year and Christmas time. The problem is increased by the fact that no one wants to stay in a caravan or chalet at this time of year. The main problem is a guest will need to stay for more than a week, arrive Christmas Eve (or just before) and depart New Years Day.
This kind of accommodation for such a popular area fill up very quickly. In theory certain days may be better for making your reservations such as Black Friday or Cyber Monday but again, it may be better to go for convenience; just look for spaces and go for them.
Sadly, there seems not much impetus for Cornish hoteliers to put their prices down. There is too much demand for very little supply. Having said that there is usually no harm in looking on our website, you will definitely will find a bargain for a short Xmas break or for New Years eve.
A popular town
Although people usually come to St Ives for the sun and the beaches the area is still popular out of season, as you might guess from the information in this article. Many people actually prefer Cornwall off season as it is not filled to overflow with crowds and the scenery can be appreciated more. You certainly can’t visit Cornwall without visiting St Ives, so it best to make some time in your stay to do so.
It can be tricky to locate a bed and breakfast which will put people up for long periods. The solution can be simply be reducing your stay-just for 2017 Christmas and Boxing Day. Not only is it less expensive all in, you are more likely to find a cheaper rate. The same thing applies if chose to only stay at St Ives for New Year’s Eve (NYE) and New Year’s Day 2018. One solution to the lack of accommodation may be staying in another part of Cornwall where there is accommodation (such as Penzance, but even then there seems a shortage of b&bs). So book early to avoid disappointment.
Perfect for the family or larger groups are St Ives’ fully furnished apartments. These apts can be rent for 1 night, the weekend, a short break, or longer. A popular area is staying at the harbour, the Wharf.
Interesting things to do
Should you get to St Ives for a short break you will find a number of Christmas markets-including a farming market-as well as craft workshops to enjoy. There is access to live music throughout December. An especially interesting thing are the ghost story nights.
Celebrations : Several streets of St. Ives are closed for traffic from 6pm. Festivities are held at New Year Eve all over St Ives, mainly around the harbour. Many bars, pubs, restaurants, clubs and hotels hold their own party and firework display as well. When staying in accommodation on the Wharf, you will have a fantastic view of the spectacular firework display.
It’s the country’s third largest fancy dress party after London and Edinburgh Hogmaney in Scotland. Many people all dressed up in costumes hitting the streets to celebrate the new year.
The main fireworks display is held at the harbourfront over Smeatons pier and the beaches of St Ives.
Christmas Events : X-mas events include various craft and food fairs, the arrival of Santa in the harbour and turning on of the town lights, a Christmas shop window competition, Santa railway train rides on the St Ives Link.
Within easy driving distance is the lovely seaside town of Newquay and Falmouth on the South coast of Cornwall UK.
