Leeds General Infirmary (LGI) is located in the city centre and is a large teaching hospital. It was first opened in 1771, then moved location in 1863 to Great George Street and was opened by the HRH The Prince of Wales. The Grade I listed building, designed by Sir George Gilbert Scott, has been extended many times since and now includes the more modern Jubilee Building. This newer building provides dedicated care for critically-ill patients who may have suffered a major trauma, heart and lung problems or serious brain injury.

On top of the Jubilee Building there is a helicopter pad where the Yorkshire Air Ambulance crew brings sick patients from across the whole of Yorkshire and beyond to receive treatment by the hospital’s team of experts. The Infirmary has a large A&E department and also a separate dedicated facility for babies and children up to 16, located close to the facilities of Leeds Children’s Hospital it ensures well co-ordinated care for youngsters. The award-winning One Born Every Minute Channel 4 series highlighted the great work done at the General Infirmary’s maternity unit.

The General Infirmary, also known as the LGI, is a large teaching hospital located right in the city centre of Leeds in West Yorkshire. It’s part of the Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust. LGI is one of the leading centres in the UK for neurosurgery, and one of 10 centres in the UK for Paediatric cardiology.

The medical facility provides many general acute hospital services such as an A&E department, intensive care, state of the art operating theatres and a high-tech high dependency unit.
