The main campus is situated just over a mile from the city centre and is a mix of Gothic, art deco and contemporary buildings. The Victorian Gothic Great Hall is worth a visit and is now used mainly for examinations and graduation ceremonies. What to do and see while staying near the uni campus
Leeds is sometimes referred to as the ‘London of the North’, and offers visitors a huge variety of attractions, shopping, restaurants and nightlife. The historic city centre is easy to explore on foot, taking in the monumental architecture of the Town Hall and the shopping opportunities in the Victoria Quarter with its glamorous arcades.
Leeds has several museums and art galleries, including the Royal Armouries and the Thackerey and City Museums. There are also attractions dedicated to its industrial heritage. Armley Mills, situated on the newly redeveloped canal side area, is housed in what was the world’s largest woollen mill.
For evening entertainment visitors will find many nightclubs as well as opera, ballet, film, cabaret and concerts. Sports enthusiasts will find the city has much to offer.
It is home to Yorkshire County Cricket Club, based at the famous Headingly Cricket Ground, as well as the Elland Road Football Stadium, both of which can be visited. Many attractions in the city centre are free to visitors and there is ample parking as well as a mainline train station and a coach station.
Budget Friendly Properties – Hotel and b&b rooms for the night !
Visitors to the city will find plenty of low cost hotel rooms, apartments for rent, and bed and breakfast accommodation for a night, both in the centre or in the surrounding countryside.
Most will have either street or underground car parking available; and some are located conveniently close to the train station. Some cheap hotels are situated in attractive country houses two or three miles from the city centre, but there is an excellent public transport system and taxis are very economical.
A lot of B&B rooms can be found in old public houses with plenty of history and character, many offering excellent breakfasts and evening meals in their own restaurants. Many of the hotels are situated close to museums or galleries in the heart of the town but there are also plenty of reasonably priced accommodations near the main university campus, useful for prospective students or visiting families.
