Royal Air Force base during World War II
The airport was opened back in 1938, and it served as a Royal Air Force base during World War II. After the end of the war, the airport was transformed into a commercial one. From the mid-1960s to the 1970s, the airport became the operating base for a range of charter airlines.
Customer numbers decreased steadily in the 1980s. To address the issue, the local council began investing in airport infrastructure. A new international terminal was created, alongside an automated baggage facility. London Luton Airport has seen a series of renovations since 2000. The number of gates was increased, and a new departure hall began welcoming travellers in the beginning of July, 2005.
Today, London Luton Airport serves as a base for numerous low-cost airlines, and it welcomes just slightly fewer than 10 million passengers per year. Planning a trip to the capital city via Luton Airport? If so, you are probably looking for inexpensive accommodation opportunities.
