Many famous stars have performed live at the venue
Work started on the Art Deco Dominion Theatre in March 1928 and although it has undergone much modernisation and restoration work the interior still features the original light fittings and Art Deco plasterwork. The outside has recently been restored to almost its original outline of an attractive bow-shaped frontage faced with Portland Stone.
After several successful shows, including Charlie Chaplin’s City of Lights in 1931 the theatre was adapted to become a cinema in 1933. Despite a short closure during the Blitz, it remained a cinema until the late 1950’s reopening as a musical venue with The Judy Garland Show. Among its most famous shows was Rodgers and Hammerstein’s South Pacific which ran for four years from 1958.
Many famous stars have also performed live at the venue, including Dolly Parton, Bon Jovi, David Bowie and Van Morrison. Its most famous recent hit was We Will Rock You which opened in 2002 with the curtain finally coming down on this success in 2014. A varied programme is planned for the Dominion’s revamped future so keep your eye out for upcoming events when planning your trip to the capital.
The venue was also home to the Tony Award-winning musical An American in Paris. The play is performed by the original stars, Robert Fairchild and Leanne Cope.
Located in the vibrant Bloomsbury District
The vibrant Bloomsbury District was made famous by a group of early 20th-century writers known as the Bloomsbury Group. These included E.M. Forster, John Maynard Keynes and Virginia Woolf while the British Museum, University College London and the British Library are all within its boundaries.
Guided or self-guided walks take you on a gentle stroll around the homes and haunts of these writers. Taking a stroll around the area also reveals some wonderful 18th-century Georgian architecture, a lot of which has been converted into comfortable accommodation for the city’s visitors.
While a visit to the British Museum is a must, alternative museums include the Charles Dickens, Pollock’s Toy and the Foundling Museums. For younger family members, Regents Park which is home to the London Zoological Gardens is an easy bus or tube ride away.
Bloomsbury and the area around the Dominion Theatre makes a great base for a visit to London, especially for theatre and museum lovers. A wide choice of B&Bs, budget bed and breakfast and cheap hostels and hotels sit alongside more luxurious choices of accommodation.
Some Additional Information about the venue
The Dominion Theatre is located in West End London, and is a 2069 seat music venue. The theatre also hosts conferences and events.
