Sunderland AFC Football Ground – Stadium of Light
A football club with history dating back to 1879, Sunderland Association Football Club has its roots in Tyne and Wear County, which is in North East England. With their home team colours of red and black they have consistently proven to be a competitive and fierce club winning championships over the years. The most recently awarded recognition was being named the Football League Cup finalists for 2014.
The football club plays in the Stadium of Light which as of 2002 has a capacity of 49,000 seats and was built from the ground up in the middle of the 1990’s. Average attendance on match day is 40,000. When not in use for a game, the Stadium of Light facility is used for conferences, concerts, and even weddings.
Out-of-Towners will find that cheap hotels and b&b’s are not available extremely close to the stadium, but that the transportation offered is more than sufficient to get to and from any accommodation.
If you do not want to stay in one of the handful of b&b’s or cheap hotels in the direct vicinity, you can also head to the North Sea coast to Roker Beach. Still within a half an hour walk to the stadium, guests can find rooms in chain establishments, cheap hotels, and bed and breakfast lodgings as examples of alternative accommodation. If all else fails, staying in nearby Newcastle and catching a metro to the stadium is an option where there are also several b&b’s and low cost hotels to stay in. Keep in mind that some places require a minimum reservation time for the rooms they rent, so it would be in your best interest to check out what the area around the Stadium of Light has to offer.
How to get to
It is fairly convenient to reach the stadium, which is a short stroll away from the Sunderland city centre ground. When first coming into the city via train, the National Rail has a stop (Sunderland) which is located nearby to the football stadium. Furthermore the St Peter’s and Stadium of Light Metro stops were constructed to benefit the stadium.
Quite convenient for highway travellers, a park and ride system is available on match days to enable viewers to park a further distance away from the stadium and avoid traffic headaches.
Dining and Pubs
As the ground is located in a bustling city, this allows guests to have their choosing of places to dine and drink. The dining and night entertainment scene extends to the marina and includes a range of gastronomes from local pubs, to gourmet restaurants, and takeaway.
Whether you crave Thai, Italian, or classic English cuisine something diverse can be found in the city centre for all tastes and budgets. For the adventurer, lively restaurants are also found on the outskirts.
Sunderland has loads to offer football fans and general tourists alike. With its beach coastal location, green outdoor spaces, and cultural pride there is always an array of fun activities and interesting sights that make the town appealing. Bed and breakfast lodging is only part of the charm. Let’s not forget the plethora of art be it contemporary or grass roots music, the city has something for everyone.
