The town has been a port since receiving a royal charter in 1606 from King James I and for many years was both an area of ship building and ship breaking.
The ferry port has good road access, both to the M20 and the M2, and ample parking. Shuttle buses link the port to the town’s railway station from where trains run to the London stations of St Pancras and Victoria as well as the coastal town of Ramsgate.
Normally viewed more as an exit and entry point to the country, the town and the surrounding area does have plenty for visitors to see and do. Everyone is familiar with Vera Lynn’s White Cliffs of Dover, where you will find a visitor center and beautiful hiking trails with views over the Channel and the Kent countryside.
From here a visit to the South Foreland Lighthouse is worth making, especially if you brave a trip up the winding staircase to the top. The impressive Norman castle sprawls across the hilltop above the town. Built in the 12th century, it was designed to defend this narrow and vulnerable point of the Channel. Always of strategic importance the town has had tunnels from the castle to the coast for many centuries.
These were used extensively during the Second World War, most significantly to mastermind the evacuation of troops from Dunkirk. During the Cold War they were set up to become an emergency seat of government in the event of a nuclear attack. They are now open to visitors.
