Also, situated right on the harbour is the house where James Cook stayed for a short time, today the location of a museum dedicated to him. The old abbey, situated on a cliff overlooking the sea is also one of the major attractions here.
And once you’re done with the day’s shopping and sightseeing, and need a break, or you’re planning to dine out in the evening, you have a variety of choices, from fish and chips to refreshments served at cosy cafes.

Main railway station ?
Regular trains arrive in Whitby coming from Middlesbrough. Trains, operated by Northern Rail, follow the route of the picturesque Esk Valley.
Another option is to take the steam train service from Pickering across the North Yorkshire Moors National Park to Grosmont. It’s a fabulous journey across the moors on these restored steam trains. Grosmont and Pickering stations were used as locations for the production of some of the Harry Potter movies.
Alternatively you can town by coach. You can use the Coastliner service from Scarborough town centre, Bridlington, Leeds West Yorkshire, York city center, Malton etc. From Middlesbrough in the North you can use either the X56 or 93 bus services to Whitby.
