London’s Apollo Victoria Theatre – Introduction
London’s Apollo Victoria Theatre is located directly opposite Victoria train and coach station in the district of Westminster. It opened in 1930 as a cinema and variety theatre, later becoming a home to musicals, seeing the first production of the Sound of Music in 1981. This was followed by Starlight Express which ran for nearly two decades.

There are two identical facades and entrances to the theatre, one on Wilton Road and one on Vauxhall Bridge Road, which are a true art-deco blend of vertical grooving and marble columns. The interior is also art-deco with scallop shell decorations and column tops of sculptured fountains.
For the production of Starlight Express the interior was modified to house a ‘race track’ that took performers through the audience. There is no parking at the theatre but metered street parking is available in the evenings and there are underground car parks nearby.
The theatre is near London Victoria Station which also has the nearest underground as well as housing a bus and coach terminus. A pleasant stroll away is Parliament Square, a large open space famous as being a site of protests and demonstrations. Many important buildings surround Parliament Square, the Palace of Westminster, the home of Parliament being one. Others are Westminster Abbey and Westminster Hall, St Margarets Church, the Middlesex Guildhall and Portcullis House, where MPs have their offices. Big Ben towers over the square.
The name ‘Big Ben’ actually refers to the great bell of one of the clocks, rather than the whole tower. Although it is not possible to go inside ‘Big Ben’, guided tours of the adjoining Houses of Parliament can be taken. The ancient buildings of Westminster Abbey and Westminster Hall are both worth a visit.
A most unusual attraction close to the theatre is the Fire Brigade Museum, which covers the history of firefighting since the Great Fire of London in 1666. Here you can see old fire appliances and equipment and even watch recruits in training.
If you wish to view some art take a look at the Queen’s Gallery. Part of Buckingham Palace, this gallery exhibits works from the Royal Collection. When you are ready for a break from museums and galleries take a shopping trip along Regents Street and London’s Oxford Street, where you will find a mix of well known names and high end shopping.
