It is easy to see why when one considers the range of activities on offer in the area. In the first instance, the Cotswolds is renowned for its hiking possibilities, offering everything from gentle strolls to strenuous hilly climbs. For those seeking a more gentle time, hours can be spent sampling local produce at a wide variety of tea rooms, restaurants and hotels.
The historical and bustling market is still held every Tuesdays and hosts up to 200 stalls, making it the largest open air market in the Cotswolds. Access to the main street market is granted easily, with accessible car parking and user friendly bus routes. However, the transport links out of town are also fantastic, making it an ideal cheap holiday destination.
With all of this on offer, it can sometimes be hard to find cheap accommodation in the area, though it is possible with a little bit of searching.
Where to Stay ?
To experience first hand the bustling town, it is well worth staying in one of the stunningly exquisite b&bs and hotels that line the High Street. Dating as far back as the seventeenth and eighteenth century, the range of accommodation on offer provides elegance but without breaking the bank.
Prime examples of such accommodation includes the White Hart Royal, a seventeenth century former coaching inn and the Swan Inn bed and breakfast, set in a gorgeous Georgian stone building. Both these and many other b&bs can be found on the High Street or very nearby, offering the holiday maker a wide range of choice in the heart of Moreton – in – Marsh.
There is, of course, more to the town than just the market place. Just outside the town there are many other sites to explore and activities on offer. Batsford Arboretum is just a 4 minute car journey away and provides an immediate escape form the hustle and bustle of the town. Home to one of the largest private tree collections in the country, it offers 56 acres to explore, followed by freshly baked food in the high quality cafe.
For a great family day out, the Cotswold Falconry Centre really should not be missed. The centre is home to 150 birds, including eagles, falcons, vultures and kites. The birds can be seen in their Breeding Avaries or during one of the daily flying displays (see website for up to date times).
Staying just outside of the town centre will offer you a wider choice of budget accommodation, from b&bs and hotels to self-catering options. Transport links into Moreton – in Marsh are very good from many surrounding areas, therefore staying just outside the boundary of the town is often a sensible option for the budget conscious. The choice of quality hotels and bed and breakfasts remain high, with some of the buildings continuing to be just as steeped in history as the ones in the town itself.
One example of such is the White Bear Inn Hotel. This inn dates back to the early eighteen hundreds and is just 7 miles from Moreton -in – Marsh train station. Offering bed and breakfast, dinner and evening meals, this 10-bed establishment is ideal for families, couples or friends looking for cheap accommodation in the area.
For a quirkier, yet still relatively cheap b&b option, the Old School in Little Compton is definitely worth considering. This b&b is, as the name suggests, set in an old school and retains many of the original features, such as classroom doors and exit signs dotted around the place. This unique accommodation is only 3.5 miles from the centre of Moreton – in – Marsh and is a great option if you do not wish to stay in one of the many hotels in the town centre itself.
Whether you are seeking a relaxed weekend away to while away the hours or an active few days in a bustling town, Moreton – in -Marsh really can provide it all and with such a wide range of activities and accommodation options on offer, you may find yourself returning again and again.
