What to do while staying in the town centre – seafront or near the beach
Plenty of budget friendly hotels and cheap bed and breakfast is located close to the beach. Several offer a swimming pool and family rooms. Looking for a self catering ? Several holiday apartments can be rented for a weekend, week or longer.
Other guest houses are aimed at the surfing and backpacking market and will offer a choice of individual, double or dormitory accommodation. Many farms near the town or on the edge of Bodmin are run as B&B’s, again many will have family rooms available. Some have converted old farm outbuildings into holiday accommodation designed for self-catering. These usually offer excellent value for money. Public houses and holiday homes in the area also offer rooms to rent.
The town makes a good starting point for exploring north-east Cornwall. Bodmin Moor, Newquay seafront and Fistral Beach, Boscastle and Tintagel are all within easy reach.
Bude Canal, which runs through the town, now only extends a few miles inland but was originally used to transport mineral-rich sand from the beaches for agricultural use on the moorland fields. The canal fell out of use with the arrival of the railway.
As you stroll around the town center you will see a mixture of old and new buildings. Look out for Quay Cottage in the centre, which is reputed to be the city’s oldest house. Bude Castle overlooks the harbour and seafront; but is not as old as it looks having been built in 1830. It is now open to visitors as the Heritage Centre.
From the Castle restaurant you can enjoy splendid views across the breakwater to Chapel Rock and Summerleaze Beach. Exhibitions in the Heritage Centre include the area’s geology and natural history and the town’s development as a tourist resort and surfing centre.
There are several good walks you can take into the countryside or along the coast. A walk on theSouth West Coast Path which cuts through the town along the seafront, will give you a good view of the interesting rock formations that characterise the geology of the area. The Canal meanders through the countryside and you can enjoy a cream tea or hire kayaks as you enjoy a walk along its banks.
There are several good beaches close to the town itself, they are known for their good surfing conditions. Many shops sell or hire surfing boards and equipment if you would like to have a go at surfing.
There is also a seawater filled pool near the seafront. Widemouth Bay, to the south of the town is a long stretch of sandy beach, ideal for families, whilst Flexbury Beach to the north of the town has plenty of rock pools to explore. Popular in town is staying for a couple of nights, a weekend or a week in a holiday home. These holiday homes are within easy reach of the town center and beaches.
