Discover a wealth of historical attractions
Cambridge may be most famous for its world-renowned university but the city has just as much to offer to visitors as it does students. With world class restaurants, charming bed and breakfast accommodation, beautiful parks, brilliant entertainment options, fantastic shopping and stunning architecture on virtually every street corner, it’s a city well worth getting to know.
With a history that can be traced back to long before the Roman Empire, Cambridge offers visitors a wealth of historical and cultural attractions. From the dozens of fascinating museums and art galleries to the stunning Gothic-era churches and buildings to the simple sight of thousands of eager students cycling off their their lectures, this city is a feast for all the senses.
The University itself is a major tourist attraction with most of the college allowing visitors to tour outside of exam time. Academics there have won more Nobel prizes than those of any other educational establishment in the world. King’s College, along with its chapel, is the most visited of all the academic buildings.
Another popular attraction is The Backs – a particularly picturesque area along the banks of the River Cam so named because the rear grounds of a number of colleges from the university can be seen from here. Now designated a Grade 1 Historic Park, a walk through The Backs is an excellent way to get the know the city.
Further afield, aviation enthusiasts will enjoy the collection of military planes – as well as the Concorde – at the Duxford Imperial War Museum. Cambridge does a great job of paying due homage to its long history while at the same time establishing itself as a centre for state-of-the-art technological and academic excellence.
A fantastic selection of guest houses and bed & breakfasts
Cambridge has a fantastic selection of hotels, guest houses and other forms of accommodation to suit a wide range of budgets. Whether you’re visiting for business or for pleasure, whether you prefer to stay at a plush, city centre establishment with all mod cons, or at a simple bed and breakfast place on the outskirts of the city, you’ll have no trouble finding somewhere to suit you needs.
If you’re looking for a cheap b&b, Tenison Road is a good place to try. A 10 minute walk from the train station, it is close enough to the city centre to be a great base from which to explore all the major attractions. Guest houses come in all shapes and sizes, from those providing cheap b&b accommodation to those aimed at more upmarket guests.
Self catering is another option when visiting the city center and, if you want to know what it’s like to be a student at the university, you can even stay in a college room. If, however, you want to be pampered during your stay, several luxury hotels are available, often in prime locations with stunning views of the river or parkland or close to amenities or transport hubs such as the main shopping areas or the train station.
Cambridge city center is located in Cambridgeshire, in East Anglia about 50 miles (80 km) north of London. Look for affordable or more luxurious place to stay for 1 Night, 2 Nights, a weekend, or longer.
Many rooms have an en suite bathroom. A full breakfast, cooked to order is served in the morning.
