If your budget is really stretched, then consider one of the good value hostels as an alternative to the cheap hotels. Although basic their rooms will be clean and often have en-suite facilities. The chain hotels are, of course, represented in the area with their bed and breakfast accommodation, clean rooms, satellite TV, en-suite bathrooms and, very often, free toiletries.
Apartments, whether self-catering or serviced, provide an alternative means of staying in the capital and give a brief taste of life there. With a bit of online research you are sure to find some that are surprisingly economical.
Bed and breakfast accommodation in the city will often be housed in some beautiful old converted buildings, Edwardian or even earlier. Don’t forget the traditional B&B’s, again they are often in converted family homes and offer a friendly and welcoming place to stay for the night.
Where is ?
Getting to the capital city couldn’t be easier with its two main international airports, Gatwick and Heathrow International Airport. Both have regular coach and train links into the city, or if you’re feeling a little more extravagant hop in a black taxi. When staying near St Thomas Hospital or the Evelina Children’s Hospital you couldn’t be more centrally placed for exploring the wonderful heart of London. Within easy reach are the Big Ben and The Mall by Buckingham Palace, which is also the finish line of the London Marathon.
You have the Waterloo Mainline Station as well as the Lambeth, Westminster and Waterloo tube or underground stations only a short walk away. The hospital is right on the River Thames and directly opposite the Palace of Westminster.
Guided tours of this seat of Parliament can be taken. As you cross Westminster Bridge, look up at Big Ben, one of the largest clock faces in the world. A pleasant day can be spent walking along the Embankment, taking in the activity on the River Thames, maybe even venturing out on a boat trip.
Before long you will come to the London Eye and the Aquarium in the old County Hall building. This fabulous aquarium is well worth a visit with its tanks that extend down through several floors. A trip on the iconic Eye as it slowly revolves gives panoramic views across the city and some amazing memories to take home.
Across Westminster Bridge and a short walk along the river is the reconstruction of Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre. You might be lucky enough to catch a performance here, but if not take the opportunity to explore this round theatre and visit its museum.
If the weather is kind and you want to relax outside, then London has several beautiful parks. The closest is St James, near Buckingham Palace, with its lakes and water birds.
