The hospital has been on its present site since it opened in 1852 under the patronage of Queen Victoria, starting with just 10 beds. Having featured in several TV documentaries over the years, it received more recent fame and publicity when the hospital’s staff had a starring role in the opening ceremony of the 2012 Olympics (Olympic Stadium).
